As one of our oldest industries, sugar cane farming has been a staple of the country’s agricultural sector for over 150 years. Today, our nation is home to around 150 sugar mills, producing approximately 4 million tonnes of raw sugar annually. 80% of production is for the export market.
Queensland and New South Wales are the major sugar-producing regions, accounting for over 90% of the country’s total production. With a rich history dating back to 1865, the sugar industry has evolved significantly over time, driven by innovation and technological advancements.
From traditional varietals to improved ones, sugar cane cultivation is an intricate process that requires careful planning and management. Water conservation is also a top priority, with many farmers implementing modern irrigation techniques to minimize their environmental impact.
But it’s not just about the sugar itself – the industry provides direct employment to over 15,000 people across the country and supports thousands more through associated industries like transportation, packaging, and processing.
RM Group is uniquely positioned to fill these positions for the various industry players. We are proud to support an industry that is so important to our continued growth as a country. So next time you reach for your favourite sweet treat, remember the hard work and dedication of our nation’s sugar farmers!
